Presenting lectures are one of the oldest methods of effective teaching. (Mckeachie p.55) Power point presentations were designed as an adjunct to lectures. Whether using lectures, power point or a combination of the two, when the instructor is preparing for the presentation, there are certain guidelines they should follow. Knowing your audience, keeping their attention, being aware of the environment, and delivering a successful lecture are a few. Knowing your audience is a universal element to teaching. Being creative is a great way to maintain your audience’s attention. Finally, make sure the audience has learned what was intended for them to learn. There are some cons to using power point presentations such as technical difficulties, dependency, and commitment. While lectures are known as one of the oldest ways of effective teaching, a significant amount of studies show there are more effective ways. Adding power points to the presentation has increased the effective ness of the basic lecture. Power points allows the student to make a visual connection. They also allow students a chance to catch up or follow along with the lecture. Some instructors give notes to the students so they may follow along at the beginning of the lecture. By using power points, the students will still have this advantage. Instructors are also aided with the power points, eliminating the need for lecture outlines.
